Some Homeowners Saving On Air Conditioner Repair and Replacements

byThinkhow Contributor|February 24, 2021

A new air conditioner is a significant expense, so most homeowners push their units as far as they’ll go — but over time, regular HVAC repairs can add up. If your air conditioner is showing its age, you may be able to cut your costs by looking online. The HVAC industry is competitive, and many contractors advertise aggressively. By comparing carefully, you can enjoy a more comfortable home — without overpaying.

When to Consider HVAC Repairs (And When to Buy a New Unit)

If your AC unit isn’t working properly, operating it can lead to enormous utility bills (and major repair expenses). Regular maintenance can prevent some of the most common AC issues. Before considering repair, make sure you’ve switched your AC’s filter, and consider hiring a service to clean out the ductwork.

Over time, every HVAC system becomes less efficient, and eventually, repairing your unit may be less expensive than replacing it outright. Signs of a malfunctioning AC include:

  • Unusual Noises- Loud rattling, clanking, squealing, or whirring indicate issues with the HVAC system’s mechanical components. Don’t ignore these symptoms — turn your unit off until a repair person can assess the situation.
  • Constant Operation- Your air conditioner should go through routine running cycles, even in the hottest weather. If you notice the system constantly turning on and off without much of a break, your unit might need a tune up.
  • Warm Air- Obviously, air conditioning systems should blow cold air. Warm or lukewarm air can indicate a problem with the thermostat, compressor, or air flow.
  • Weak Air Output- This can indicate a problem with the blower motor, a blockage in the ductwork, or electrical issues.

If your unit is still functional — or if you won’t need your air conditioner in the next several months — you may be able to save money by researching HVAC contractors, particularly if you’re replacing the unit. Even in an emergency situation, a quick review of your options can help you avoid a major repair bill.

Finding Qualified HVAC Professionals Online

Depending on the age of your HVAC system and the source of the damage, you may need to replace one or more components. The costs can quickly add up, and you’ll need to work with a reputable HVAC service to avoid overpaying.

Before making a decision, collect information about HVAC services in your area. Use online resources to create a list, noting each service’s capabilities, licensing, and reputation. Some services post flat-rate pricing online; if your HVAC isn’t currently operating, don’t rely on those flat-rate services when comparing prices. You’ll need to get a few in-person quotes. That’s also true if you’re getting a new air conditioner — your HVAC technician will need to evaluate your property carefully before issuing an estimate.

HVAC repair can be expensive, but the good news is that a new unit can reduce your energy bills over time. Some ways to keep the cost down:

  • When purchasing a new AC, prioritize efficiency. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing a 12-year-old air conditioning unit with new Energy Star certified model could cut cooling costs by 30 percent.
  • Look for experienced contractors. An experienced contractor will be able to right-size the new unit to your home (or perform repairs appropriately to limit energy consumption). Research each option carefully and be ready to ask for references.
  • Find services during non-peak seasons. Air conditioners tend to malfunction during the spring and summer (after all, that’s when most homeowners use them). If you need minor repairs or if you’re purchasing a new system, try to wait for the fall or spring, when contractors are less busy — they’ll be more likely to give you a deal.
  • Understand your local market. Get basic estimates from at least 3-4 contractors, then schedule in-person quotes from at least two reputable services. Remember, an inadequate repair can cost you a tremendous amount of money. Review quotes to avoid overpaying, but don’t necessarily choose the cheapest option.

Another note: Some states require HVAC contractors to carry licenses; others don’t. Find out what your state requires, then check contractors' websites to make sure they have the right credentials.

Before Repairing or Replacing Your HVAC, Do Your Research

Your HVAC system is probably the most expensive appliance in your home. To keep repair costs down — and stay comfortable during extreme weather — you’ll need HVAC technicians who know what they’re doing.

Fortunately, air conditioner repair services advertise aggressively online, especially during non-peak seasons. By comparing them carefully, you can find professionals that you can trust to do the job correctly. Whether you’re looking for a quick repair or installing a brand-new AC unit, the right contractors can make a difference.
